Comfort Pillows

Comfort pillows provide more than support.   A while back a friend told me of her breast cancer and upcoming chemo treatments. Not knowing what else to do I bought her the usual cards along with offers of sympathy and other platitudes. Then, I learned about a little pillow and the impact it can make on a person’s life. It is just a simple little crescent shaped pillow designed to fit in the under arm area.

After surgery, the breast and surrounding area may be very tender. Breast surgery and reconstruction changes weight distribution on the chest muscles. Through her year of treatment, my friend took her pillow everywhere – to the chemo center, on trips, and even to bed.  She told me years later that the little pillow not only gave her physical comfort and support but also the emotional comfort and support of knowing someone cared about her and her breast cancer journey.

Amelia Earhart inspired thousands

Amelia Earhart inspired thousands of young women who watched as the aviation pioneer literally soared to new heights to achieve her dreams against the odds.

In 1933, one young fan penned a letter to Earhart seeking advice about breaking into the male-dominated flight scene – and Earhart’s advice still resonates today. Earhart responded to the 13-year-old Detroit girl, and the contents of that previously unpublished letter have been revealed for the first time.

In it she writes:

“…as far as woman’s opportunities in flying go, I think they will improve as they have in all industries,” but when she wrote the letter, “just now there are no pilots on the regular scheduled air time. Someday I expect there will be.”

This speaks to the inspirational role that Amelia Earhart played in reaching out to girls and young women at the time when people were looking to advance their careers. But also to be inspired by somebody who had succeeded in a man’s world.

In June of 1937, Earhart famously vanished after she was on her first around-the-world flight.

Zonta is proud to have had Earhart as a member and offers a scholarship in her honor.  To learn more visit the Zonta website. www.zonta.org

NEW AREA BOUNDARIES

The Zonta International District 15 Board recommended ZI District 15 change the boundaries of the four Areas and presidents were asked to vote by email. There was only one dissenting vote so the new boundaries have been adopted. The current Area Directors and the rest of the Board will be sharing the updated Area boundaries with clubs at Fall Conference and beyond. A map will be posted on the district website.
